Roots in the heartland

Maril’s story begins on a small family farm in Illinois, where she was the oldest of seven children. Her parents—
Bud, a Chicago lawyer, and Mary, a fashion model with a love for animals—instilled in her a unique blend of city
sophistication and rural values. 

“From a young age, I learned the power of working with horses,” Maril reflects. “There’s something about the energy exchange between humans and these magnificent animals that has stayed with me throughout my career. It taught me the importance of clear communication, mutual respect, and the nuances of leadership.” 

These early experiences with horses would prove foundational, shaping Maril's distinctive approach to leadership and organizational change.
